"Salty Codgers" is the eighth episode of the second season of Teen Titans Go!, and the sixtieth overall episode of the series.

Synopsis[]

Mad Mod steals the youth from Cyborg, Beast Boy, Starfire, and Robin, turning them into Raven's favorite type of people; salty codgers. Instead of helping the Titans get their youth back, Raven teaches them how cool old people really are.

Plot[]

The episode starts with some young children enjoying themselves in the middle of the street and start mocking old men like Mad Mod. As revenge, Mod uses his magic cane to steal their youth and making them into old people and the rest of the children with teenagers, making him younger again. The Titans show up to stop him, but Raven seems to like old people as she kisses them and hugs them. After a wild chase to catch him, the Titans except for Raven, get stuck under a giant foot statue. Robin orders Raven to get the cane before Mad Mod reaches it. However, she kicks it back to him, accidentally on purpose, allowing him to turn the Titans into old people except for Raven, who dodged the laser attack.

Meanwhile, at the Tower, the old Titans arrive slowly and start to think a plan about catching Mad Mod to bring their youth back, but due to their old age, they can't hear, see or feel properly as they used to. And Raven seems to enjoy pretty much with them since she claims that they aren't annoying anymore like they used to when they were young. And then again, she makes them understand how good and mature it is, and with that part of it comes wisdom. After a very long senior fun time with old-men activities, Raven prefers to be like this forever, but not for long at a late-night when the old Titans were about to sleep, Beast Boy was in an aquarium in fish form, motionless, making Raven terrified. The other Titans said he passed, which causes Raven confusion. Raven then decides to make their last moments even better with the three remaining Titans.

Later that night, in storm weather, the old Titans had their last breath by old age, as Raven dropped a rose at their gravestones after mourning. While she was all alone in the Tower along with Cyborg's grandchildren, she realizes that she misses her friends. After the last slight tear in her eyes, she finally decides to resurrect the Titans back to life with a contact from Death himself. Her interdimensional journey towards Death's fortress was easy, knowing that she's used to horrifying stuff. When she finally reaches Death, she sees him playing a game of pool with soul balls and starts to sing and dance after a little conversation with Raven. Since he is her uncle, Death accepts to give Raven his friend's souls back only if she trades her soul in exchange. The deal has been compromised when Raven ordered first her part of the deal and didn't give him her soul claiming that she doesn't have one for being half-demon, leading Death to get tricked and curses her, allowing Raven to escape along with the Titans' souls.

Back at the Tower, when Raven returns with her friends' souls, she sees the old Titans being turned into zombies knowing that it was a part of Death's consequences. And suddenly, she starts to love them even more than being just old people as she kisses and hugs them again.

Trivia[]

  • Death and the Ferryman are both voiced by David Kaye.
  • This episode aired 10 years after the original series episode "Aftershock: Part 1"
  • This is the first appearance of Mad Mod, one of the Titans' adult enemies from the original series.
  • Starfire is apparently extremely self-conscious about her appearance, unlike her original series counterpart; not only does she react violently if anything bad happens to her hair (i.e. "Legendary Sandwich", "Nose Mouth"), but also her face in this episode (and in "Dude Relax").
  • It is shown that Raven has a strange obsession with elderly people.
  • This is the third episode to end with the Titans being old. The first two were "Super Robin" and "Staring at the Future."
  • Raven and Starfire break the fourth wall by staring at the screen.
  • This episode could be non-canon, as the episode ends with all the Titans (except for Raven) becoming old and dying.
    • This episode was also rescheduled thanks to the above reason because it was originally going to air on the day of the tragic terrorist attack in Paris, France.
    • Besides, in the French version of this episode, the scene where Raven standing in front of each Titan's tombstone is cut out.

Continuity[]

References[]

  • The gigantic foot that steps on Cyborg, Robin, Starfire, and Beast Boy is a reference to Monty Python's Flying Circus.
  • The Ferryman in the underworld is Charon, the ferryman of the dead from Greek mythology.
  • The skull bird is possibly a reference to Pirates of the Carribean.
  • All of the tombstones in the song Last Breath reference DC characters known for being dead. From left to right, they read: Boston Brand (a.k.a. "Deadman"), Jason Todd (the second Robin), Martha Wayne, Thomas Wayne (both of which are Bruce Wayne's, aka Batman's, parents) and General Zod (whose death in Man of Steel was the subject of much controversy.)
  • One of the poses Death is in seems to be the moonwalk, made famous by Michael Jackson.
  • Beast Boy's appearance as an elder looks strikingly similar to Yoda from the Star Wars series.
  • One of the punk teenagers who is a girl with indigo hair and green eye-shadow might be a reference to Marie, the middle sibling of the Kanker Sisters from the old Cartoon Network show Ed, Edd n Eddy.
    More bummer then raven

Errors[]

  • Strangely, Raven didn't care so much for the elderly in "Hey Pizza!" as she does in this episode.
  • Raven claims to have no soul in this episode and again in “And the Award for Sound Design Goes to Rob”, yet Robin was able to trade her soul to the Puppet Wizard in "Puppets, Whaaaaat?". In addition, she's able to use her "soul-self" for many of her attacks, as well as being able to become a ghost when she died in "Ghostboy" and "Hot Garbage".
  • Cyborg technically can't have grandchildren without having kids, with those kids having kids; basically, Cyborg's grandchildren just show up out of nowhere. And when he hugs his wallet, he has young, black eyebrows instead of old, gray ones.

Running Gags[]

  • The Titans being hard of hearing when they are in their old forms.
  • Raven adoring the old Titans, kissing them, hugging them and listening to their stories.
