"Costume Contest" is the fortieth episode of the fourth season of Teen Titans Go!, and the one-hundred-ninety-seventh overall episode of the series.

Summary

Tired of losing to the H.I.V.E. Five every year, the Titans hatch a scheme to win the costume contest.

Trivia

  • This is the fourth Halloween episode of the series. The previous ones were "Halloween", Scary Figure Dance" and Halloween v Christmas".
  • This episode aired one year after "Halloween v Christmas".
    • Coincidentally, both "Halloween v Christmas" and this episode have the exact air date of October 27th and both also happen to be Halloween themed.
  • This is the H.I.V.E.'s first appearance as a whole team in the fourth season of the series.
  • Interestingly, the Titans and the H.I.V.E. were seen dressed as each other. Gizmo and Robin were seen dressed as each other, following by Jinx and Starfire, Billy Numerous and Raven, Cyborg and Mammoth and See-More and Beast Boy.
  • While dressed as Beast Boy, See-More has his helmet off, which marks the first time in either series where he was seen without it.
  • Jinx is shown for the first time with her hair down and not in her normal hairstyle.
  • Apparently all the Titans are freaked out by "indoor weather" since weather belongs on the outside.
  • Cyborg breaks the fourth wall when he acts like Mammoth and says he, "really doesn't talk on the show."
  • When Raven puts on Billy Numerous' costume, she is able to create clones of herself without using her dark magic. This indicates that Billy's powers aren't innate and rather come from the suit.
  • The color of Starfire and Jinx's energy projectiles are switched when they wear each other's costumes.
  • Bumblebee speaks for the first time on the show, even though all she says is, "Boo!"

Continuity

  • This is the third episode where Birdarang has hosted an event. He first hosted Justice League's talent competition in "Justice League's Next Top Talent Idol Star", he then hosted the Titans' Teen Titans Awards in "The Academy" and he hosted the Halloween costume contest in this episode.
  • Fish bones can be seen in Aqualad's prison cell at the H.I.V.E. Tower. This may have been a cruel choice of prison food for him as Aqualad was shown to be not so fond of eating sea creatures (particularly the ones he knew) in episodes such as "Pirates" and "Rocks and Water".
  • When Robin tries putting on Gizmo's costume (the smallest costume available) it is shown to be too baggy for him. This plays into a strange phenomenon seen throughout the series where Robin appears to be of average height, but everyone else around him believes him to be much, much shorter, like in "Beast Boy's St. Patrick's Day Luck, and It's Bad" and "The Gold Standard".
  • This is the second time the Titans have cheated to beat the H.I.V.E. at a competition. The first time was in a game of dodge ball in "Artful Dodgers".
  • Raven is unhooded for the 71st time.
  • This is the second time in the series that Beast Boy turned into a bat. In "Two Parter", he was a cave bat and in this episode he was seen as a vampire bat.
  • The little black cat makes her fourth appearance in the series. She was also seen in "The HIVE Five", "Snuggle Time" and "Movie Night".
  • The H.I.V.E. Five's costume may have been inspired by Wacka Doodles, the amusement park near Jump City.

References

  • The H.I.V.E. were seen dressed as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • The H.I.V.E. centipede costume is a reference to the 2009 horror movie, The Human Centipede.
  • The Darkseid plushie is wearing a little Orion costume.
  • Robin made illustrations for various group costume ideas, mostly based on popular programs and films;
    • Mystery Incorporated - Robin as Fred Jones, Starfire as Daphne Blake, Raven as Velma Dinkley, Cyborg as Shaggy Rogers and Beast Boy as Scooby-Doo.
      • It should also be noted, in the illustration there are creepy eyes, similar to the ones seen in the opening theme for the original Scooby-Doo cartoon. Also, the Teen Titans played the exact same Mystery Incorporated roles in "The Cruel Giggling Ghoul".
    • Suicide Squad - Robin as the Joker, Starfire as Harley Quinn, Raven as Katana, Cyborg as Deadshot and Beast Boy as Killer Croc.
    • The Wizard of Oz - Robin as Dorothy, Starfire as Scarecrow, Raven as the Wicked Witch of the West, Cyborg as Tin Man and Beast Boy as the Cowardly Lion.
  • When the Titans fail miserably at sewing, Starfire mentions that she has to take back all the awful things she has said about Betsy Ross, the woman who is famous for sewing the design for the first flag of the United States of America.
  • At the costume contest we see many characters dressed in different costumes
    • One of the costume contestants was dressed as Fred Flintstone from the 1960s cartoon, The Flinstones.
    • Another contestant is wearing the ghost costume Charlie Brown wore in It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. He's even holding a rock.
    • Someone is dressed as a cardboard box robot.
    • The crying girl is dressed as Zilius Zox.
    • Ravager is dressed as her dad, Slade.
    • A DC character, Blue Devil, is seen wearing a red devil costume.
    • The Brain is dressed as a gum ball machine.
    • Speedy is dressed as an astronaut.
    • Plasmus is dressed as a ballerina.
    • Control Freak is a Star Trek redshirt.
    • Batman and Commissioner Gordon are Gilligan and Skipper from Gilligan's Island.
    • Más y Menos are skeletons.
    • Bumblebee is the Grim Reaper.
  • When Birdarang says, "Boom goes the dynamite!", it is a popular catchphrase coined by college sportscaster Brian Collin, a freshman journalism student at Ball State University making his on-air debut in 2005.

Errors

  • The H.I.V.E. Five were seen dressed as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles despite there are only four turtles and not five.
  • The first time Beast Boy puts on See-More's costume, his robotic eye was already extended out while checking out Raven in Billy Numerous' costume but after Raven duplicates herself, his robotic eye was put back into place to where Beast Boy had to extend it again which, however, should of already been judging by his previous action.
  • While wearing Starfire's costume, Jinx is able to shoot lasers from her eyes but Starfire gets this ability from her Tamaranian ancestry, not from her costume.
    • Similar to Billy Numerous while wearing Raven's costume, he was able to use her dark magic even though Raven's demonic powers are inherited from her father, Trigon and not from her costume.
  • The Titans think that heroes wearing villain costumes would be a brilliant idea for the costume contest, but earlier Robin thought the Suicide Squad costumes were boring.
    • To be fair, the Suicide Squad can be described as anti-heroes rather than villains. Also, the "boring" comment may have been a jab at the Suicide Squad movie, which has received poor reviews.

Running Gags

  • The H.I.V.E. and the Titans rubbing their faces "in it".
  • The Titans being spooked by the haunted house qualities of the H.I.V.E.'s headquarters.
